Evening in Bakirkoy After a Day at the Istanbul Expo Center

An evening in Bakırköy after the fair is an easy one: take the Marmaray back from Yeşilköy, and from our door you reach the cafés and restaurants around Bakırköy Freedom Square (Özgürlük Meydanı) and İstanbul Caddesi in 6 minutes on foot. If you want some fresh air, the Bakırköy seafront is 14 minutes away, and Capacity shopping mall is 9 minutes for anything you still need to pick up.

Getting back from the fair

When the halls close, take the Marmaray from Yeşilköy station in the Gebze direction and get off at Bakırköy, after Yeşilyurt and Ataköy. The walk to our address takes about 8 minutes. A taxi back takes 15–25 minutes depending on traffic. If you came on the M1A, take a train back on the same line and get off at Bakırköy-İncirli; from there the walk to the address is about 18 minutes.

Four options for the evening

Freedom Square and İstanbul Caddesi

Freedom Square is the heart of Bakırköy. Around it you will find İstanbul Caddesi, a pedestrian shopping street, along with the market streets, cafés and restaurants. If you have been standing at a booth all day, this is the option that asks the least of you: drop into the apartment, change, and you are on the square a few minutes later.

Because İstanbul Caddesi is pedestrian, you can wander without dealing with traffic and stroll back to the apartment after dinner. And if not everyone in the group wants the same food, the streets around the square give you plenty of different choices.

Shopping and forgotten essentials

Expo week is when a missing cable, charger, shirt or bit of stationery suddenly matters. Capacity shopping mall is in Zeytinlik, a 9-minute walk from our address. İstanbul Caddesi and the market streets cover everyday shopping too. Galleria shopping mall is over in Ataköy, so driving there is the more practical choice.

A walk on the seafront

The Bakırköy seafront is a long stretch of shoreline with a walking and cycling path, 14 minutes from the address. It is a good way to get some open air after a day in the exhibition halls. The Bakırköy seafront and İDO ferry pier are on the same shoreline: sea buses and fast ferries to Yalova and Bursa leave from here, so check the current timetable before you go.

Business dinner or team night out

If you are planning dinner with a client or with the team:

1. Pick the place around your expo closing time. The area around Freedom Square is 6 minutes from the accommodation, and the Marmaray station is an 8-minute walk.
2. Book ahead for a larger group.
3. If your guest is coming from outside Bakırköy, give Marmaray Bakırköy station as the meeting point; many places along the line can be reached without changing trains.

An evening in the old city

If you would rather give one evening to the historic peninsula, the Marmaray takes you to Yenikapı in about 15 minutes and to Sirkeci in about 20. Sultanahmet is about 35–45 minutes in total, on foot from Sirkeci or by the T1 tram. Check the last departures for the way back.

Practical notes for the night and the next day

• You can find the night-duty pharmacy on the İstanbul Chamber of Pharmacists website or on e-Devlet; in an emergency, call 112.
• If the fair continues the next day, get your clothes and badge ready the evening before.
• Check-out is 11:00, so if the evening runs long, plan the next morning accordingly.

If you want to keep the evening short

When you are at the booth early the next morning, not stretching the evening may be the smartest call. A quick meal near the square and then some rest keep the pace of expo week. Every apartment has a kitchen, so a light dinner of your own is another option. The living room in the One-bedroom apartment (1+1) and the Two-bedroom apartment (2+1) is a comfortable spot for the team to pull the day's notes together, and the free Wi-Fi makes it easy to finish your emails in peace.
